It has been said that the easiest way to solve a problem is to simply give up. But it has also been said that the Queen is secretly a lizard, so we should probably take these sayings with a grain of salt. Now, it's no secret that we have a problem with our education system in North America. The real question, however, is why? We like to say that it's the salaries, we like to say it's the lack motivation, we like to say its standardized testing, but in reality, it's none of those, yet all of them combined. It's a fundamental flaw in the system that keeps us attached to old norms that do nothing but hold us back.

This book is not about how school "sucks." what it is about, however, is what goes on in the background of the politically charged debates about education. In a word this book is honest. You won't like this book. You shouldn't like this book. I understand if you leave a one-star review. This book is filled with a student's diagnosis of what has gone wrong, and a recommended treatment of how to do it right. You won't like this book after reading this, but everything that I've written in these pages is backed up by similar experiences from my friends and students across the country. No matter how ridiculous these stories may seem, they do happen.

Brace yourself; You may be shocked.

Education? The Broken School System from a Student Perspective eBook Humam Aziz

This ebook is written from a very (and I mean *very*) jaded standpoint. Public school systems are not perfect, however, the solutions this book offer are ridiculous. The complaints are small minded and not well presented. To complain about schools raising awareness about global issues is ludicrous and petty. These issues such as anti-bullying need to be addressed. As an education major, who is coming from a public school background, I feel that the person who wrote this could stand to have a few more years of education. It is clear, based on the grammar and punctuation usage, that the importance of English classes was lost on this child. This book reads like one very long, whiney complaint. However, I applaud the author for putting it out there, be it as useless as it may be. The public school system will only give back what you put in. If you spend the time doing your homework, studying and being involved in the school community, your school years WILL be the best years of your life. However, if you exude very little effort, find excuses to not be involved, and look for ways to keep from doing real work, then you will probably be miserable. To complain about school fundraiser, that are NEEDED in most public schools in order to pay for textbooks, maintenance repairs, or even fun activities, is also a waste of time. This book was clearly written from a young person's standpoint. Which means they have absolutely no idea how the real world works. Again, I applaud them for attempting to write a book, but the mark was clearly missed. They included poor research. To include a pyramid diagram that places the superintendent at the top, followed by teachers, "A Pile Of Crap", and then students, goes to show you how small minded and uneducated this author is. This book was horrible.

Education? The Broken School System from a Student Perspective eBook Humam Aziz Reviews

I found this book very hard to read. First it was long (997 pages). By the time I got to the end of chapter 1, I was hoping that I was almost done but found I had only ready 12% of the book. Second, the tone is very judgemental and condemning with seemingly very little understanding about what actually goes into educating children. I understand this was written from the students perspective with student anecdotes, but more research should have gone into how schools are actually structured instead of how they are perceived to be structured. For example, on 115, the author presents a "Hierarchy" of how he perceives schools being set up. In this hierarchy, he is missing a tier or two between teachers and superintendent which should include the principal and other administrative personal under the superintendent. Also, whereas I am all for a little humor thrown into a serious subject to keep readers from becoming totally depressed, the mention of "a heap of dog crap" in the hierarchy between "The Students" (on the bottom) and "The Teacher" seemed more cynical then comical.

As I continued reading, there were several times I had to re-read sections because the grammar or spelling of words was awkward or outright incorrect. The haphazard nature of the topics and the sarcastic tone carried throughout the book forced me to walk away after chapter 3. I really wanted to like this book as a students perspective of a broken system and his insights as to how to improve the system from the students point of view, but that never happened. Complaints and belittlement seemed to be this author's only objective which made the book dull and drab instead of inspiring.
I appreciate this look into the school system from a students perspective, however I feel the author has missed a huge point which affects just about all of the arguments in this book. Why aren't politics mentioned at all? From the federal Department of Ed to the state Dept of Ed down to the school board. Many many many many decision about how schools are run, including the budget come from these places, not to mention senators, congressmen and women, governors and more. Don't forget the school's administrative centers too. Yes, there are a LOT of problems with our school systems, yes they could benefit greatly from increased budgets and decreased standardized tests, but for a student to tell me they find fund raisers pointless, you started to lose me even more there (after you started to lose me from failing to add politics into your pillars of a school...no, it shouldn't be there, but it is and should be addressed). Fundraisers can teach students economics, customer service, even community service, which are all important lessons to be learned. Everything from management to sales can be taught.

Overall I recommend this book because it does give a students insight into a very important problem, but also it can be used to find out where some good education can come in for our students. Teaching students why we do things, not just to do them (just like you said, we don't want to know what 2+2 is we want to know why and how to do addition. It's the same thing with many of these other complaints. Get to the bottom of it. Find out why things are the way they are. Not what you think is the reason, but the actual reason. If you don't understand why you do fund raisers or SWE, then go out and learn why it might be necessary. Growing up I found a lot of things I didn't understand made a lot more sense as I started learning more about it.
