In 1935, the corpse of an unidentified man is found in a darkened alley in Puerto Rico. Olivia, the daughter of a police investigator, finds a bloodstained love letter in her father's coat after he comes home drunk one night. She is convinced it came from the deceased man and teams up with her friend Issac to deliver it to the Labyrinth of Love Letters. The only problem is even though they have heard of this place where lovers leave notes for one another, they have no idea of its location. As they set forth on a quest to bring the letter to its intended destination, they uncover secrets from long ago that will impact their lives forever. This book had a few too many characters and story lines to keep track of which made it hard for me to ever get in a good flow of reading. It's one of those things where because it is such an intricately detailed plot, it is confusing how all of these characters and their story lines fit together until the very end. This is probably a book I would enjoy more on a second read.
The Last Valentine is a unique story and really explores the topic of true love and the sacrifices people make because of it. I enjoyed the setting of Puerto Rico and loved the concept of the Labyrinth of Love Letters. I'd say give this book a shot if you are interested in something a bit more dark and mysterious in the romance genre.

The Last Valentine Labyrinth of Love Letters edition by Felix Alexander Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
While the idea of this story was sweet and romantic in an old-world way, I had mixed feelings about it as a whole. The setup was intriguing, but from there, the first half was slow and a bit of a chore to get through. There was very little action throughout, and I struggled to connect with the characters. Mr. Alexander has a way with words, though, that brought his scenes to life with a vividness that many authors struggle to achieve.
I found the second half of “The Last Valentine”—where the actual Labyrinth thing came into play—to be a bit more engaging than the first. It was one of a few interesting elements of the story that was somewhat diminished by the slow pacing and underdeveloped plot, however, and left me wanting something more. The awkward scene transitions, occasionally distracted narrator, and vaguely aloof characters didn’t help. At times, this cast seemed almost flat and Mr. Alexander missed a number of opportunities to develop them into something his readers could relate to.
That being said, I loved the writing style. It was detailed and beautiful and allowed me to picture the setting without being overwhelmed by the author’s vision. I suspect this is where Mr. Alexander’s poetic background served him best. It was definitely the best thing this story had going and I found myself having to backtrack a little to get back into the actual goings-on at times. I did think the ending was Hallmark-movie-channel cliché, though I suppose I understand why it came about as it did.
As for editing, this could use some attention. From things like inconsistent capitalization to incorrect word choice, the typos started appearing early enough that I was distracted by them.
Bottom line A sweet story that lacked some character connectivity. If you’re a fan of gorgeous prose that takes it’s time and don’t mind a lack of action in your love stories, or are in the mood for a sweet read, this might be just the thing.
Throughout this entire read, I had mixed feelings. At times, I felt like I really liked the story and other times, not so much.
I will admit that the legend of the labyrinth had me intrigued. A place where two former lovers met in secret and eventually exchanged love letters. How is sweet is that? Then, to find a blood-stained letter within the coat of a gentleman who was murdered? Can we say intrigue? Definitely, the premise of the story is strong.
It is clear that the author has a strong hold of what love is and the different forms of this emotion. Some of the language is also beautiful to read in this piece, especially those concerning love and friendship.
However, as strong as the premise is, the execution could use some work. I found that most of the characters were extremely underdeveloped and unrelatable. Though my favorite character was the lovely Issac, Olivia’s best friend, due to his loyalty to his friend and his genuine kindness, the other characters were sort of ‘meh’. Olivia’s motives for returning the letter is sweet, but what she fails to grasp is the letter is a major piece of evidence for the murder that recently occurred. Because of her willingness to steal this piece of evidence (originally stolen from her father), I lost respect for her. I mean, it’s a murder investigation, not some silly love story. But, then again, without this we wouldn’t have a story.
I also found some of the plot presentation choppy. The historical information that were thrown in the book seemed out of place at times, and I felt took away from the story. However, my main concern was the ending. The confrontation at the end was extremely quick and ended abruptly, and then decades passed by within a chapter and a half. I understand the need to explain certain aspects of each characters’ lives in order to have good closure, but I felt I was thrown a bunch of information all at once.
Finally, the editing of this book was not the best. There were words misspelled, quotation marks missing, use of modern-day language in an old-time story, a character’s name misspelled, and fragments.
Overall, parts of this story I enjoyed, while others I did not. Having more character development, better plot flow, and another few rounds of editing, this could be a good book.
